Stephan Mündges

Coordinator, European Fact-Checking Standards Network (EFCSN)

The European Fact-Checking Standards Network (EFCSN) supports fact-checking organizations to monitor media in 20+ languages and deliver targeted prebunking materials before misinformation spreads. The EFCSN will develop an advanced multimodal, AI-powered monitoring tool to enhance resilience against misinformation. The project will use real-time data analysis to monitor news cycles and video content, matching emerging trends to known disinformation narratives. This enables fact-checkers to produce relevant and targeted prebunking content across 20+ languages before misinformation spreads and ensures effective distribution of media literacy and anti-disinformation resources to journalists, media organizations, and campaigners

Stephan is the EFCSN Coordinator, leading the operations of the EFCSN. Previously, he worked as the general manager of the Institute of Journalism at TU Dortmund University, Germany’s leading institute for university-based journalism education. He was also one of the coordinators of the German-Austrian Digital Media Observatory (GADMO) and served on the EDMO Executive Board. Before transitioning into academia, he worked for 12 years for the German public broadcaster ZDF, focusing on his reporting on digital policy, platform regulation and disinformation campaigns.
