Joey Siu is a Hongkongese-American human rights advocate. She currently works at the National Democratic Institute (NDI) where she covers Hong Kong, Taiwan and China illiberal influence portfolios. Joey played a vital role during Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protests of 2019 as a student leader, organizing on-campus and city-wide large scale protests. She also co-founded the student coalition, the Hong Kong Higher Institutions International Affairs Delegation (HKIAD) which led a cohesive effort in international advocacy for Hong Kong.
Following escalating online and physical harassment and threats, she fled Hong Kong in late 2020 and settled in Washington D.C. , and served as the advisor to the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC) and policy advisor to Hong Kong Watch from 2020-2022. Besides advocacy for Hong Kong, Joey is also a dedicated advocate for human rights in Tibet, East Turkestan (the “Uyghur region”), and other areas under Chinese Communist Party (CCP) oppression. In exile, she played a leading role in establishing the cross-movement coalition between young activists from CCP-oppressed communities, and executed successful advocacy initiatives including the #NoBeijing2022 campaign. In parallel to her grassroots organizing, she has also testified before the United States Congress, and the Canadian Parliament on human rights situations in Hong Kong, the decline of free expression in the Asia-Pacific region, and humanitarian relocation policies for politically-oppressed communities.
