Mette Frederiksen
Acting Prime Minister of DenmarkTalks at Copenhagen Democracy Summit 2024
Mette Frederiksen is the acting Danish Prime Minister and member of the Social Democratic Party, born on November 19, 1977, in Aalborg, Denmark, and raised in a working-class family with deep trade union roots across three generations. She became a member of the Social Democrats' youth branch at fifteen, worked for the Danish Confederation of Trade Unions, and was elected to the Folketing in 2001 at the age of twenty-four. She later completed a master's degree in African Studies while serving as an MP.
Following the Social Democrats' return to power in 2011, she served as Minister for Employment under Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt, and was appointed Minister for Justice in 2014. She became party leader in 2015.
Elected Prime Minister in June 2019, she became both the youngest person and the second woman to hold the office in Danish history. Her tenure was defined by several major tests, including the COVID-19 pandemic response and strong support for Ukraine following Russia's 2022 invasion.
Most recently, she became a prominent international voice standing firm against Trump's threats to acquire Greenland, with her approval ratings surging in response. Since the elections in March 2026, she is acting Prime Minister and currently negotiating a new government.
