Gen Nakatani is a Japanese politician and member of the Japanese House of Representatives as the Deputy Secretary-General of the Liberal Democratic Party. As part of his affiliation with the Liberal Democratic Party, he has been elected ten times in Kōchi’s 1st District. He was born in Kōchi and attended the National Defense Academy of Japan.

He is currently a member of the Standing Committee on Internal Affairs and Communications, Special Committee on Anti-Piracy Measures International Terrorism, and Japan's Cooperation and Support. He has also directed several committees during his tenure such as the Standing Committee on Science and Technology, Special Committee on Guidelines for Japan-U.S. Defense Cooperation, Special Committee on Political Ethics and Election Law, and Standing Committee on Security.

His administrative roles have included residing as Parliamentary Vice-Minister for the National Land Agency, for Home Affairs, and of Posts and Telecommunications. He has also served as Minister of State for Defense.

He first ran for elected office as a Liberal Democratic Party candidate in the 1990 general election and won one of five seats representing Kōchi Prefecture.
