Standing up for Freedom in Hong Kong

In addition to hearing Carmen's story, we are delighted to host Danish sculptor, Jens Galschiøt's work entitled "Pillar of Shame".

Galschiøt has fortefeited his sculpture's copyright and released the 3D blueprints for his work Pillar of Shame in 2021 as a reaction of the original 8-meter-high sculpture being removed from the University of Hong Kong in 2021. The 3D blueprints of the sculpture allows the public to 3D print a tiny version of the statue. (At CDS you can get your own 3D printed version by Galschiøt in the foyer). The sculpture shows a series of twisted bodies stacked on top of each other in memory of the victims during the protests in Tiananmen Square in 1989. Galschiøt called on the public to 3D print the sculpture, place it in every corner around the world and take photos to upload to social media. He added that people can bring the miniature statue to “possible or impossible places”, like the Chinese Embassies or councils in other countries. Galschiøt continued that although the sculpture located in the campus of the University of Hong Kong will be removed, over a thousand of replicas of the sculpture will be displayed else where, continuing the memory of the massacre.
